Five hundred years ago a man drew himself inside a circle, eight heads tall, and declared it the measure of all things. He was wrong by a head and a half.
The old masters set down the true proportions: the cat stands six heads and one half. The head is the measure of all the rest, for within it sit the eyes, and the ears drawn forward. The joints of elbow, wrist, and knee are drawn as circles, and the knee is the widest of these, for from it comes the leap. The foot is long and flared.
The man with open arms touches the circle that contains him. The cat grants the ground only a fraction of its weight. The rest it keeps, in case it decides to leave.
